Places to Visit in Chandigarh

Chandigarh, the city beautiful is the famous tourist spot located in north India. Chandigarh is a union territory and city of India. Chandigarh is the capital of two Indian states, Haryana and Punjab. Chandigarh means the fort of Chandi, this name is derived from Chandi Mandir, dedicated to a Hindu goddess Chandi. Chandigarh is the first planned city of India and famous on an international level for its urban design and architecture. City projects were designed by architects like as – Jane Drew, Le Corbusier, Maxwell Fry and Pierre Jeanneret. In 2010, Chandigarh was reported as the cleanest city in India.

In present time, Chandigarh is at the peak point in tourism. Nature lovers from various parts of India visit here to enjoy the beautiful theme gardens. There are a lot of tourist attractive places in Chandigarh. Some of them are as follow : – Leisure Valley, Sukhna Lake, Capitol Complex, Rock Garden, Open Hand Monument, Sector 17, Government Museum, International Dolls Museum, and Rose Garden etc.

Leisure Valley : – Leisure Valley is near by the M.L.A. hostels. At Leisure Valley landscapes are so much beautiful. This area is almost covered with thick trees, flowery shrubs and bamboo plants. The life cycle of an annual plant completes in a year but to manage the garden blooming, there are different annual plants to come into flower in each season. So the park always blooms with the flowers. In summer season garden blooms with various flowers like as – hollyhock, cocoa, ratanjot, Zenia, iris and marigold etc. and in winter season – petunia, sweet sultan, snapdragon, silver cup, cock comb, silver tip, sweet peas, fox glove, cosmos, lavetera, begonia, helipterum etc.

Sukhna Lake : –

This lake is situated at the north – east corner of the city. The lake club organizes water sports every year. Environment society of Chandigarh organizes a program in winter of migratory birds. Environment society of Chandigarh also organizes a farewell program in the end of the winter season. These programs are very popular with school children. In November Sukhna lake becomes the host of migratory birds like as – spot bills, Pintails, brahminy ducks, teals, bar headed geese, coots, and cormorants etc. At this time the Sukhna lake gets alive with fluttering, frolicking and hopping of the birds. You can find water snakes swimming in the water and some resident birds like as – water hens, egrets, moorhens, bitterns and water clocks.

Capitol Complex : –

Capitol Complex is located in sector – 1. It is the most visited tourist spots of Chandigarh. Capitol Complex comprises the headquarters of two states – Punjab and Haryana. Its geometrical building of concrete is really great.

Rock Garden : –

It is the most attractive tourist spot in Chandigarh. Rock garden is located near Capitol Complex. Rock garden is in 12 acre area and built by Nek Chand. This garden’s uniqueness is understandable. The art objects in a rock garden are made up of city waste material.

Rose Garden : – Rose Garden is in area of sixteen acres. Rose Garden is known as the largest rose garden in Asia. Rose Garden of Chandigarh comprises 1600 types of roses. Many varieties are produced by the grafting process.

Open Hand Monument : –

It is the most important monument is Chandigarh. The Open Hand Monument is located in the Capitol Complex. Its hand made up of metal sheets and rising 85 feet high in the air.

Sector 17 : – Sector 17 is the most popular spot for youngsters. Sector 17 has the latest shopping market of Chandigarh city. This sector is decorated with sculptures, fountains and trees, looks like a paradise on earth.

Museum of Evolution of Life : The Museum is located in Sector 10 of Chandigarh takes visitors on a trip 5,000 years back from the Indus Valley Civilization to the present day.
timing : open from 10.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. and is closed on Mondays.

Le Corbusier Centre : Set up at his old Sector 19 office, the Centre exhibits his life and works, so that tourists and future generations can acquaint themselves with the rich cultural heritage of the city. A must visit place for all.

Chandigarh is close to some hill stations like Kasauli and Shimla, Chail So this is also a plus point. Some other places near Chandigarh are Chhatbir Zoo, Pinjore Garden, Morni hills.
