Mussoorie City Guide – Mussoorie Travel Attractions

Mussoorie is a hill city in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. Mussoorie also known as the Queen of the Hills is situated on the foothills of Himalayas at an average altitude of 6,600 ft. It presents a fairyland atmosphere to the tourists. The place got its name from a shrub called ‘Mansoor’ found abundantly in the locale. Like any other hill station the climate of Mussoorie is pleasant throughout the year. The temperature varies form 1 °C during the winters to 31 °C in summer seasons. The roads are blocked by snowfall during winters and during the monsoons the roads are dangerous to travel. The best time to visit the hill station is during the spring season, from September to November. A short description of some of the attractions in Mussoorie is given below.

Gun Hill

The Gun Hill the second highest peak in Mussoorie offers a wonderful bird’s eye view of the Himalayan ranges of Bunderpunch, Srikantha, Pithwara, Gangotri, and many other peaks. One can reach this peak through the famous Ropeway. Traveling the 400 meter ropeway itself will be an exciting and unforgettable experience to the tourists. One can also reach the top by the bridle path, which takes about 20 min.

Camel’s Back Road

As the name suggests, the Camel’s Back Road is the natural layout of rocks in the shape of a camel’s hump back. It starts form Kulri Bazaar and ends at the Library point. One can get a clear picture of the road from the Mussoorie public school. It serves as a promenade for morning and evening walks and horseback riding. The scenic beauty of the Himalayan ranges is one other thing to be enjoyed while promenading through Camel’s Back Road.

Clouds End

Clouds End is an antique English style bungalow, which now functions as a resort. It was one among the first few constructions of Mussoorie. It is about 8 km from the Library point. A thick forest with a wide variety of flora surrounds the resort making it an ideal spot for honeymoon couples. The panoramic view of the snow clad Himalayan peaks and the River Yamuna will certainly take one to cloud nine.

The Kempty Falls

The Kempty Falls just about 15 km from Mussoorie is a great attraction to the tourists. Set on the hilly terrains, the Kempty falls is an eye candy for viewers. The cascading waters of the falls delights both young and adult alike. It is said that the name was derived form ‘Camp Tea’, due to the tea parties organized by the English during the pre-independence days.

Other places of interest in and around Mussoorie include Mussoorie Lake, Vinog Mountain Quail Sanctuary, Dhanolti, Nagtibba, Municipal Garden, Yamuna Bridge, Jharipani Fall, Bhatta Fall, Brentwood Sanctuary, and many more.

Transport and Stay

Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest airport to Mussoorie. There are regular flights from Delhi. The nearest railway station is at Dehradun. It connects all major cities of India, such as Delhi Mumbai, Howrah, Lucknow, Varanasi, Amritsar, Saharanpur, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Allahabad, Ujjain, Indore, Kathgodam, and Okha. Mussoorie has three bus stands Library Bus Stand, Masonic lodge, and Tehri Bus stand. Mussoorie is well connected to places like Dehradun, Delhi, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Shimla, and Chamba by roadways. Local transport is provided by buses, taxies, and ponies.

Avalon Resort, Surbee Resorts, Jaypee Residency Manor, and WelcomHeritage Kasmanda Palace are some of the hotels with star comforts.
