Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay is located in the state of Maharashtra. Mumbai is the capital city of Maharashtra and is also known as the financial capital of India. From June to September, the city receives south-west monsoons and during this time, especially in the month of July, there is a heavy rain fall. The highest ever recorded rainfall in a day in Mumbai is 944 millimeter which was in the year 2005. This day compelled entire Bombay to come to a standstill where several people were stuck in traffic for more than a day. The winters arrive in the month of December and last up to February.

This monument was actually built to commemorate the visit of Queen Mary and King George V to Mumbai (then Bombay). The architecture of this monument is a good example of Indo-Saracenic style of architecture. Gateway of India is so famous that several tourists who plan a visit to Mumbai and surroundings begin their journey from this great monument.
